BURLEIGH SECONDARY MODERN SCHOOL

(formerly Hyde Park Secondary Modern School)

(at some time known as Burleigh House School)

This site is dedicated to the pupils who left the School, having attained the school leaving age during 1964 or earlier who by 2009 will 60 years of age or older and also to the memory of Miss Vera Sparkes who was the Head Mistress during these years.

A Reunion for these pupils is being planned for 2010. More information can be found on the next page 2010 Reunion.

1956 same scene now

Hello and welcome aboard. From 1955 to 1990 Burleigh was the school for many of us. This site gives you the opportunity to re-establish contact with past pupils and teachers. It also gives the opporunity to share experiences and memories. The idea is to assemble historical material; photographs of interest; documents of events; may be the 'odd' school report! A virtual chronicle of Burleigh Secondary Modern.

The 1944 Education Act resulted in a School known as Hyde Park Secondary Modern being established. War damage caused the School to operate at several places in the Peverell area of Plymouth. There were pupils being taught at Hope Baptist Chapel, Plymouth Cricket Pavilion, and Pennycross Methodist Chapel. In 1947 three Horsa classrooms and other accommodation became available in the grounds of Burleigh House.

Burleigh Secondary Modern School was built in 1955 on the site of Burleigh House, Torr Lane, Peverell, Plymouth. It no longer exists.

Burleigh House was eventually demolished and became the School playing fields. By the 1960's there were 585 pupils on the register, but owing to falling numbers the School was closed during July 1990 and demolished by the end of August that year.
